چکیده

Numerical models that combine weather forecasting and atmospheric chemistry are here referred to as chemical weather forecasting models. Eighteen operational chemical weather forecasting models on regional and continental scales in Europe are described and compared in this article. Topics discussed in this article include how weather forecasting and atmospheric chemistry models are integrated into chemical weather forecasting systems, how physical processes are incorporated into the models through parameterization schemes, how the model architecture affects the predicted variables, and how air chemistry and aerosol processes are formulated. In addition, we discuss sensitivity analysis and evaluation of the models, user operational requirements, such as model availability and documentation, and output availability and dissemination. In this manner, this article allows for the evaluation of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the various modelling systems and modelling approaches. Finally, this article highlights the most prominent gaps of knowledge for chemical weather forecasting models and suggests potential priorities for future research Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union. 2 J. Kukkonen et al.: A review of operational, regional-scale, chemical weather forecasting models in Europe directions, for the following selected focus areas: emission inventories, the integration of numerical weather prediction and atmospheric chemical transport models, boundary conditions and nesting of models, data assimilation of the various chemical species, improved understanding and parameterization of physical processes, better evaluation of models against data and the construction of model ensembles.

The use of Argo data in the operational ocean forecasting activities at the UK Met Office

The Forecasting Ocean Assimilation Model (FOAM) system is an operational short-range deep ocean forecasting system. It consists of a set of nested model configurations, ranging from a global 1 ̊ model to intermediate resolution basin-scale models down to high resolution regional models, each of which takes boundary conditions from the larger-scale models. The models are forced at the surface by ...

Unstructured Grid Antarctic Weather Forecast System

Weather forecasting in Antarctica is essential for US Antarctic Program (USAP) operations. However, forecasting in this region is extremely difficult both because the observational and modeling tools available are inadequate and because our understanding of the science behind the meteorology of Antarctica is incomplete. The weather of Antarctica is dominated by three factors: (1) the polar high...

Weather, climate, and hydrologic forecasting for the US Southwest: a survey

As part of a regional integrated assessment of climate vulnerability, a survey was conducted from June 1998 to May 2000 of weather, climate, and hydrologic forecasts with coverage of the US Southwest and an emphasis on the Colorado River Basin. The survey addresses the types of forecasts that were issued, the organizations that provided them, and techniques used in their generation. It reflects...

Improving Regional Forecast by Assimilating Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) Profiles into WRF model

The use of state-of-the-art hyperspectral sensors--such as the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) on NASA’s polar-orbiting Aqua satellite--to retrieve high vertical resolution thermodynamic profiles and their subsequent assimilation into forecast models holds promise in improving weather predictions. This improved vertical resolution over previous capabilities results from the use of thousands...

Linking crop yield anomalies to large-scale atmospheric circulation in Europe

Understanding the effects of climate variability and extremes on crop growth and development represents a necessary step to assess the resilience of agricultural systems to changing climate conditions. This study investigates the links between the large-scale atmospheric circulation and crop yields in Europe, providing the basis to develop seasonal crop yield forecasting and thus enabling a mor...
